Women and Judaism:

This class will explore many different facets of women’s roles and histories within Jewish text and tradition. This will include women in the Bible and Talmud, Jewish laws about women's rights and obligations, Jewish feminism, modern women’s Midrash, and women's involvement in ritual and prayer. Specific topics will be chosen based on the interests of the group.  

 

The class will meet on Sunday afternoons, 3-4:30 pm, on the following dates: 

January 12, 19, 26

February 2, 16, 23

March 1, 8, 15, 29

April 5

 

Suggested donation (sliding scale): $36-118, payable directly to Gila

 

Instructor: 

Dr. Gila Silverman is an anthropologist and writer, specializing in the study of ritual and identity among American Jews. She is a Visiting Scholar at the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and has conducted research on women’s experiences in Jewish academia, gender and Jewish mourning, prayer for healing, American Jewish identities, and Jewish spiritual development.
